Wrightfield offers and number of types of conveyor belts. Each type of belt has specific advantages and disadvantages. and selection will depend on the operating requirements and volume through puts. In this article  a topic we look at Modular, PU and Slat, Wire Mesh will be included in a future article.

Conveyor belts can be made from a variety of materials, including rubber, PVC, urethane, neoprene, nylon, polyester, and steel. The type of material used will depend on the specific application and requirements of the conveyor belt, such as the type of material it will be transporting and the environment it will be operating in. Some conveyor belts are designed for heavy-duty applications and are made from materials such as steel or reinforced rubber, while others are designed for light-duty applications and can be made from lighter materials such as PVC or urethane.

Modular Belt

This flexible conveying solution is able to convey products through inclined paths, as well as horizontal and helical paths. Moreover, the belt is very flexible and permits 90 degree and 180 degree turns.

These attributes make these types of conveyor belts well suited to winding routes. The modular belt is an extremely reliable and versatile conveyance solution, having been tried and tested in a variety of disparate environments and situations.

Key features

  • Available in lengths and widths to suit all applications
  • This belt is very low maintenance
  • Made from FDA approved materials

Slat Belt

Owing to its hinge design, the slat belt is extremely flexible, and able to handle complex loops and tight corners. This makes the slat belt suited to facilities in which space is at a premium. This type of belt often used to convey smaller, lighter duty items.

Key Features

  • Extremely flexible
  • Suited to long, winding routes, such as those one may encounter in a bottling plant
  • This belt can be used for overhead conveying

PU Belt

The polyurethane belt (also called the PU belt) is a versatile belt that is used across a number of different industries. The belt is capable of conveying all manner of products, from delicate food substances to large boxes.

The PU belt is one of the types of conveyor belts that is particularly well suited to the food industry, this is in part owing to its resistance to liquids, such as grease, oil and water. Furthermore, the belt is resistant to the highly abrasive cleaning chemicals that are regularly used in the food industry.

Key Features

  • This belt is made from high resistant materials
  • The belt is designed to deliver durability and robustness and to provide high levels of hygiene
  • Available in specifications tailored to the needs and wants of the customer

Overview of Conveyor Belts

There are several types of conveyor belts that are used in a variety of industries. Here are some of the most common types of conveyor belts and their typical uses:

  1. Flat Belt Conveyors: These are the most common type of conveyor belts and are used in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, distribution, and packaging. They are typically made of rubber or plastic and are used to transport products along a flat surface.
  2. Modular Belt Conveyors: These conveyors consist of individual interlocking plastic modules that are connected together to form a belt. They are commonly used in the food industry to transport products through processing and packaging equipment.
  3. Cleated Belt Conveyors: These are similar to flat belt conveyors, but with cleats or ridges on the belt to keep products from sliding off. They are often used to transport products up inclines or to separate different products on the same belt.
  4. Roller Conveyors: These conveyors use rollers to move products along a surface. They are often used in material handling and warehousing applications, such as moving boxes and pallets.
  5. Magnetic Belt Conveyors: These conveyors use magnets to hold and transport magnetic materials, such as metal parts or scrap. They are commonly used in recycling and metalworking industries.
  6. Wire Mesh Conveyors: These conveyors use a mesh belt made of stainless steel or other metals to transport products through high-temperature ovens or freezers, as well as for washing and drying applications.

These are just a few examples of the many types of conveyor belts available. The choice of conveyor belt type depends on the specific application and product being transported.

Regular maintenance is essential to keep conveyor belts running smoothly and prevent breakdowns or downtime. Here are some common maintenance tasks that can be carried out on conveyor belts:

  1. Cleaning: Regular cleaning is important to prevent the buildup of dirt, debris, and other contaminants on the conveyor belt. This can be done using a combination of manual cleaning and automated cleaning systems, such as high-pressure water jets, air knives, and brushes.
  2. Belt alignment: Misalignment of the conveyor belt can cause damage to the belt, rollers, and other components. Regular checks should be carried out to ensure the belt is aligned properly and any misalignments are corrected.
  3. Belt tension: Proper belt tension is critical for smooth operation of the conveyor belt. The tension should be checked regularly and adjusted if necessary.
  4. Lubrication: Lubrication of the bearings and other moving parts is important to prevent wear and prolong the life of the conveyor belt. This can be done using grease or oil, depending on the application.
  5. Component inspection: Regular inspections of the rollers, pulleys, and other components can help identify any wear or damage that needs to be addressed. Any damaged components should be replaced as soon as possible.
  6. Electrical checks: If the conveyor belt is powered by an electric motor, it is important to check the electrical connections, control panels, and other components regularly to ensure they are working properly.

These are just a few examples of the maintenance tasks that can be carried out on conveyor belts. The specific maintenance requirements will depend on the type of conveyor belt, the application, and other factors. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance and consult with a qualified technician if there are any issues or concerns.
